Why bother the famous sound of the A-7 say the purest? Because the Altec horns cannot produce the same SPL (sound pressure level) of frequencies over 5000 hz as they do below 5000 hz.  Sure they still sound good, but allowing a well designed 3 way crossover and a high output smooth sounding tweeter makes all the difference. Back in the 50's when the A7 was designed, many music sources did not need extended high frequency response that  a 3 way system could provide. Dayton metallized polypropylene capacitors are used in critical midrange and tweeter signal paths. 18 gauge inductors were used to keep DC resistance to a minimum. A unique design feature of the low pass section allows use of 4 or 8 ohm woofers, perfect for building a multi woofer system. The midrange and high pass sections are rated for an 8 ohm load.
